The Term

Awareness creates the search. Evidence decides the answer.

Marketing is not the rival of Affirmation Search. It is the reason there is one.

Three steps, in order

Marketing creates awareness. Television, direct mail, a sponsorship, a truck in a driveway, a referral from a neighbor. Every one of them does the same job: it puts a name in someone's head. That job matters, and nothing on this site argues against it.

Awareness creates the search. A person who now knows the name has a new question. It is no longer who does this work. It is: now that I know you, should I trust you? They take that question to a search box or an AI platform, with the name already in it.

Evidence decides the answer. What comes back is assembled from whatever can be found about the company: what customers say, what employees say, what the company has published, what third parties have written. The marketing that created the search has no seat at this step.

The handoff nobody owns

Most companies spend real money on the first step and measure it carefully: impressions, calls, cost per lead. Almost none of them look at the third step, even though that is where the money spent on the first one is either converted or lost.

You paid for the search. The evidence waiting there decides what it was worth.

Reputation Intelligence, chapter 13

The sequence also explains why being found is not the same as being chosen. Awareness can be bought. The answer to an Affirmation Search is built from evidence, and a company can only change it by changing the evidence behind it.

When the answer hedges

Greg Cummings describes what happens when the evidence is thin, using a hypothetical window company he calls Joey Windows. The homeowner asks whether Joey Windows is a good choice, because a neighbor used them. An emphatic answer says yes and says why. A weak one sounds like this:

They seem like they have a good reputation. They're a little bit smaller of a company. You might want to take a look at X, Y, and Z businesses as they have a better warranty, service, and guarantee.

The neighbor's referral brought that homeowner to Joey Windows. The answer sent them somewhere else. He calls it hijacked traffic: the awareness was earned by one company, and the decision went to another because the other one's evidence was easier to find.

The referral is not the sale

A referral never walked in with the checkbook on the table. In Greg Cummings' words, it earns the right to sit at the table, and the person who received it searches the name before, and often after, they sit down.

If your business doesn't show up favorably on AI and somebody knows your name on a referral, that doesn't mean they purchase with us, right?

Do not game the prompt

The obvious response is to try to manipulate the third step: stuff questions and answers everywhere, write for the machine, find the new version of keyword stuffing. The book that describes this sequence refuses that shortcut plainly.

Do not game the prompt. Build the answer.

Reputation Intelligence, chapter 7

The answer is built from the evidence. A company that wants a better answer needs better evidence, which means it first needs a company worth the evidence.
