Distinction

Affirmation Search vs. Reputation Management

Reputation management starts when something goes wrong. The search that already knows your name runs every day, including the days when nothing has.

Reputation management is the discipline of protecting a company's public image once something has put it at risk: a complaint that spreads, a review that turns unfair, a headline in the wrong place.

What reputation management does

It is triage, and triage is a real job. When a complaint spreads or a review turns unfair, somebody has to respond. Reputation management teams watch for that moment, answer what can be answered and work to limit what cannot. Companies that skip it get hurt.

Where it stops

It starts after the damage is visible, and it tends to stop once the specific item is handled. It reacts to the loudest voice in the room. It rarely asks what the quiet majority of customers would say if anyone had asked them, and it has no reason to look at the days when nothing is wrong.

But the search that already knows your name does not wait for a crisis. It can run after any referral, any estimate and any signed contract. A company with no complaint anywhere can still return a hesitant answer, because a hesitant answer can come from thin evidence, not only from bad news.

And where the complaint is true, the book that frames this work is blunt about which tool to reach for.

The wrong move is more reputation management. The wrong move is trying to bury reviews, flooding search with positive articles, asking how to get AI to say something nicer, or finding friendlier witnesses. The company does not have a messaging problem. It has a company problem.

What Affirmation Search adds

A standing reading instead of an emergency response. The same questions, asked the same way, on a schedule, with the sources recorded. It treats a quiet, thin answer as a gap worth closing, not a problem solved. And it does not try to make an answer nicer than the company. Greg Cummings says it directly: a bad company cannot be made to look great, because the answer is only as good as the evidence behind it.
