Distinction
Affirmation Search vs. SEO
SEO wins the search for people who are looking for somebody. Affirmation Search begins when they have already found you.
SEO, including what is now called AI SEO, answer engine optimization or generative engine optimization, is the discipline of earning visibility for a search: getting a page found, ranked and chosen from the results.
What SEO does
SEO earns the search. It studies what people type, builds pages that answer it, and competes for position so that when someone looks for a service, a city or a category, the company is one of the results they see. AI SEO extends the same instinct to answer engines: structuring content so a model is more likely to find and surface it. Both are about being found by people who are looking. Both matter.
Where SEO stops
SEO is at its strongest on the searches that do not contain your name. Once the name is in the question, the job changes. The person is no longer choosing between companies on a results page. They are deciding what to believe about one company, and the answer they get is built from the record: reviews, articles, the company's own pages, what employees say, what third parties say.
A page can rank first and still say nothing a stranger would trust. And a company can win its own name on the results page and still lose the person one click later, to a review platform or a comparison site sitting beside its result.
Being found is not the same as being chosen. Getting the click is not the same as earning the recommendation.

What Affirmation Search adds
A second question, asked after the first one is won. Not can they find you, but what are they told when they do. Measuring it means asking the questions people actually ask with the name in them, reading the answer and its sources, and doing it again next month. Improving it means evidence built to answer a specific question, not content built to rank for a keyword.
Greg Cummings frames the shift in terms of what the platforms now reward. The advantage goes to companies that are, in his words, "able to put on the internet and educate AI on all of the things that they do," and he calls it "the great separator over the next 24 months." That is a forecast, and it is his.
