The Definition
What Is an Affirmation Search?
One sentence, never varied. Everything else on this site is built on it.
Affirmation Search is any time a search is conducted with the name of your business already in it.
It is the moment someone who already knows you decides what to believe about you.
The sentence, and each part of it
Any time. Not one kind of platform, not one stage of a purchase. Before the appointment, after it, the night the contract is signed, a year later when the warranty is tested. The search happens whenever someone needs to decide something about you.
A search is conducted. Typed into a search engine, asked of an AI platform, entered on a review site. The definition does not care where the question is asked. It cares what the question contains.
With the name of your business. This is the whole distinction. A search for "roofers near me" is looking for somebody. A search that contains your name has already found you.
Already in it. The word that matters most. The person searching is not discovering you. They know who you are. Somebody told them, or they saw the truck, or they sat with your salesperson an hour ago. They are no longer asking who exists. They are asking what to believe about this one.
Who coined it
Greg Cummings, founder of Power100. He describes it through the referral: a customer who got the name from a neighbor, and what that customer does before picking up the phone.
In his own account, from a call about AI findability in June 2026, the example is a named company and a real household question:
Is Joey Windows a good fit for us? Our neighbor used them, but we're not sure. Enter. Are we overpaying with Joey Windows? Does Joey Windows have a good warranty?

The questions arrive with the name already in them. That is the definition, spoken before it was written down.
First use
The term is on record in Greg Cummings' own words by June 2026, in calls about AI findability, and it is the headline of the private AI findability workshop he scheduled for company leadership teams in July 2026. His book, Reputation Intelligence, gives it a chapter: chapter 7, The Second Kitchen Table. How the two terms relate is on its own page. This site was published to hold the definition in one place, in one sentence, so that every other use can point back to it.
How it differs from a search that does not carry the name
| A search without your name | An Affirmation Search | |
|---|---|---|
| The person knows you | Not yet | Already |
| The question | Who does this, near me, for this price | What should I believe about this company |
| What it decides | Which companies get considered | Whether you get chosen, kept or dropped |
| Who is competing | Every company in the category | You, against the record about you |
A search without your name is where marketing and SEO do their work, and it matters. But once the name is in the question, the competition changes. It is no longer your company against the category. It is your company against its own evidence: what customers say, what employees say, what the record shows, and what an answer engine concludes from all of it. Greg Cummings puts the bar plainly.
AI is the ultimate truth serum.

What the definition does not say
It does not say the search is hostile. Often the person running it is already leaning toward you: the neighbor recommended you, or they liked the salesperson who just left. It does not say the answer is fixed. Evidence can be built, and the answer moves when it is. And it does not say a company can talk its way into a better answer. The answer is built from evidence, and a better answer needs better evidence behind it.
The short answers
What is the definition of Affirmation Search?
Affirmation Search is any time a search is conducted with the name of your business already in it.
Who coined the term?
Greg Cummings, founder of Power100, the independent platform that ranks top CEOs and companies in the home-improvement industry.
Is it only about AI?
No. The definition covers any search that carries the name: a search engine, an AI platform, a review site. AI is why the moment became urgent, because the answer now arrives as an explanation assembled from whatever evidence exists, not as a list of links the person sorts through themselves.
